In 1608 Captain John Smith sought shelter in the serene waters of an area known as “Owanancock” to the native population. Four Hundred years later, the placid creek he sailed into still laps at the shoreline and neighborhood docks in historic Onancock, Virginia. In the spirit of Capt. Smith and the legions of explorers and adventurous souls that have followed in his wake, today's visitors are turning to the water to better understand the rhythms of life in this quaint Bayside town.
As you paddle through the gentle currents of the creek you gain a unique perspective on the natural and cultural history of the area. Blue Herons, and Egrets gliding past picturesque historic homes remind you that these histories are inseparable. Watermen unloading their catch at the wharf remind you that these histories are ongoing. As you learn more from your guide and your surroundings, you realize that these histories now include you. That the water that passes beneath your hull is the most important highway in this small town... and it leads to a whole new world to explore!
